Breathing Correction

Restoration of Efficient Breathing Pattern – Full Breathing Pattern

Respiratory correction is a therapeutic method that focuses on adjusting and improving breathing patterns. Proper breathing can influence the body’s posture, muscle tension, and regulate emotions. However, due to lifestyle factors, stress, and bad habits, many people may have issues with their breathing patterns.

Improper breathing patterns can lead to a variety of physical problems, including anxiety, stress, fatigue, muscle tension, and postural problems. The goal of respiratory correction is to help people relearn proper breathing techniques, thereby improving physical function and health. Therapists typically start by assessing the patient’s breathing pattern, body posture, and movement performance, and then provide training and correction to improve the related physical functions.

What Kind of Breathing Patterns Do We Have?

Under normal physiological conditions, breathing patterns can be broadly classified into three types: neck breathing, chest breathing, and abdominal breathing.

  • Neck breathing: Low tidal volume, relatively high breathing rate Low energy efficiency Mainly uses the scalene muscles, sternocleidomastoid, and upper trapezius, which can easily lead to neck muscle fatigue
  • Chest breathing: Lower tidal volume than abdominal breathing, higher breathing rate Lower energy efficiency Can quickly exchange air, suitable for vigorous exercise Mainly uses the intercostal muscles and chest muscles, which can easily lead to tension in the chest and back muscles
  • Abdominal breathing: Higher tidal volume, lower breathing rate Good breathing depth, higher energy efficiency Suitable for relaxation or slower movements like yoga and Tai Chi Mainly uses the diaphragm, and depending on the method, can lead to lower back muscle tension if only the front abdomen is used, or be more ideal if the front and back abdomen are used simultaneously

What Is Full Breathing Pattern?

Full breathing, using both chest and abdominal breathing simultaneously, focusing on the front and back, is also called mixed breathing. This can improve the body’s core stability and reduce the risk of injury.

In normal circumstances, the body will naturally regulate and choose the optimal breathing pattern. However, with prolonged poor posture, emotional stress, various injuries or illnesses, the breathing pattern may change and lose its efficient regulatory function.

Breath correction can improve the body’s posture and the efficiency of movements, enhance muscle condition, and reduce tissue tension and pain. At the same time, it can alleviate your stress and anxiety, promote physical and mental relaxation, and achieve a balanced, harmonious state.
