Musculoskeletal Manipulation

Follow Anatomy, Evidence-Based Practice

Musculoskeletal manipulation is a treatment method based on the anatomical structure and function of the human body. Through manual techniques on muscles, joints, and ligaments, it restores the body’s coordinated balance.

The main treatment techniques include massage, traction, joint adjustment, etc. By applying pressure or traction through manual techniques, they can relieve muscle tension, increase joint mobility, and improve local blood and lymph circulation, thereby achieving the goal of pain relief and functional restoration.

What Are The Different Types Of Musculoskeletal Manipulation?

Musculoskeletal manipulation can be mainly divided into techniques targeting joints and techniques targeting soft tissues.

Joint techniques include the commonly used Maitland, Mulligan, and McKenzie systems, which specifically address issues such as spinal stiffness, nerve compression, and other problems with joint misalignment.

Soft tissue techniques include Muscle Energy Technique and Anatomy Trains, which mainly address problems with individual muscles or fascial mechanics.

What Conditions Can Musculoskeletal Manipulation Treat?

Joint techniques are mostly suitable for treating joint stiffness, joint dislocation, and poor blood circulation in the joints, such as torticollis and frozen shoulder.

Soft tissue techniques are mostly suitable for treating multiple pain points at the same time, as well as problems with fascial compensation, such as poor posture from prolonged sitting or running-related injuries.
