Postural Correction

Reconnecting Body Awareness and Perception

Posture correction is a therapeutic approach that aims to adjust and improve incorrect postures. Due to lifestyle, work habits, and muscular imbalances, poor posture can lead to various physical problems, including muscle tension, discomfort, pain, and functional impairments. Some common poor postures include kyphosis (round back), forward head posture, uneven shoulders, winging scapulae, anterior pelvic tilt, and flat feet.

How to Start Posture Correction?

The therapist typically begins with a comprehensive assessment of the individual’s posture, including the positions and symmetry of the feet, knees, pelvis, spine, and shoulders, as well as the breathing pattern. This helps to accurately identify the sources of fascial tension, inactive muscle groups, and inefficient breathing patterns.

It’s important to note that improving posture is not just about chest expansion, abdominal bracing, and chin tuck. Avoiding overcorrection is also crucial, as excessive chest expansion and abdominal bracing can compromise the stability of the lumbar spine, and prolonged muscle locking can lead to muscle fatigue and soreness.

The 4 Steps of Posture Correction

  1. Identify the sources of resistance: Release unnecessary tension in the body’s superficial and deep layers, allowing the body to return to its natural state and reduce the burden.
  2. Awaken the dormant muscles: Activate the postural muscles that have become weak due to lack of use, such as the internal obliques, transverse abdominis, thoracic erector spinae, and cervical longus muscles.
  3. Choose an appropriate breathing pattern: Modify the original breathing habits and adopt a breathing pattern that supports the desired posture.
  4. Increase personal awareness: Establish a connection between the brain and the body, gradually integrating the correct posture into your consciousness.

Posture correction can help you regain a healthy, confident body, improve physical efficiency, and alleviate various discomforts and pains. If you experience the symptoms mentioned above and they negatively impact your daily life or work, it is recommended to seek a physical therapist for assessment and treatment.
