Neck Pain

Nerve Compression│Degeneration│Whiplash Injury

Neck pain or cervical spondylosis is becoming increasingly common and is also affecting younger individuals as technology and sedentary lifestyles progress. Prolonged computer use and frequent mobile phone use can lead to excessive strain on the neck and shoulder muscles. In mild cases, this can result in pain, while in more severe cases, it can cause nerve compression leading to upper limb numbness and weakness.

If relevant overuse injuries or nerve compression occur, it is recommended to seek early assistance from a doctor or physiotherapist for examination, treatment, and learning to avoid certain activities to prevent worsening of the condition.

Causes of Neck Pain

  • Incorrect posture
  • Prolonged work hours with insufficient breaks
  • Improper exercise/movement techniques
  • Injuries from accidents like car crashes or boxing
  • Degenerative joint changes with aging
姿勢不正, poor posture
頸痛, neck pain

Symptoms of Neck Pain

  • Joint stiffness, reduced range of motion, pain and crepitus with movement (joint degeneration)
  • Neck pain, hand numbness/tingling, muscle weakness (disc herniation, nerve root compression)
  • Abnormal neck muscle rigidity, headache, dizziness, muscle weakness (cervical instability)
  • Difficulty maintaining good posture, muscle fatigue (muscle imbalance)

Patients with neck pain should decide on whether to undergo X-rays, CT scans, or MRI scans based on the severity of their symptoms, worsening trends, and the professional opinions of doctors and physical therapists.

Physiotherapy for Neck Pain

The most important aspect of cervical spondylosis is taking a thorough medical history, as it can help determine the severity and urgency of the condition. Cervical spine injuries have a high risk of affecting the nerves, so it is crucial to undergo early examination, including X-rays, CT scans, and MRI scans.

Chronic cervical spondylosis is mostly caused by poor posture, leading to muscle tension or joint misalignment. Manual therapy and traction therapy are suitable treatment methods. Common physiotherapy treatment include:

TCM Treatment for Neck Pain

From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), neck pain is related to the accumulation of dampness and stagnation of Qi and blood stasis. Common TCM treatments include:

Chinese herbal medicine: to regulate qi, dispel dampness, and promote blood circulation

Acupuncture: to relieve muscle spasm and pain, and strengthen tendons and bones

Manual Therapy: to release deep and superficial muscle tension

FAQ

Upper limb numbness is often due to nerve compression, which can occur in the neck or the upper limb itself. Nerve compression symptoms like numbness, tingling, or burning sensation are typically felt in the area supplied by the compressed nerve. Some upper limb numbness may also be related to blood circulation problems, often associated with sleeping positions and lack of movement.

Symptoms of cervical nerve compression:

  • Numbness or tingling in the upper limbs when bending the head down, looking up, or rotating the head
  • Muscle weakness in the upper or lower limbs
  • Decreased balance and coordination
  • Difficulty controlling urination and bowel movements

Before imaging tests, consider the following:

  • Any accompanying dizziness or headache?
  • Any pain severely impacting daily activities and work?
  • Any pain and numbness/tingling spreading in extent?
  • Any muscle weakness in the upper or lower limbs?
  • Any difficulty controlling bowel/bladder function?

If any of the above occur, it is recommended to consult a doctor early and, based on the overall situation, decide whether to undergo an MRI scan.

Neck pain is closely related to daily habits, work duration, and job nature. Neck pain patients should:

  • Avoid prolonged mobile phone use with the head tilted down
  • Maintain proper posture when using computers, with upright back and shoulder support
  • Take regular breaks and stretching after prolonged computer/mobile use
  • Use a supportive pillow of adequate thickness when sleeping
