Sports Injuries

The term “Sports Injury” refers to the most common types of injuries that occur during sports or exercise, but they are not limited to just athletes. Sports injuries can be divided into two main categories: acute and chronic injuries. Acute injuries happen suddenly, such as sprains, strains, or falls. Chronic injuries typically develop gradually due to overuse of a certain body area. Examples of acute injuries include sprains and dislocations, while common chronic injuries include shin splints and stress fractures.

Common Injuries

Ankle Sprains

Shin Splints

Lower Back Strains

Rotator Cuff Tears

Patellar Tendinitis

Knee Ligament Sprains

Meniscus Injuries

Shoulder Dislocation

Management after Sports Injuries

The treatment for sports injuries depends on the type of injury, but minor injuries can often be treated at home. For more serious injuries, it is recommended to seek medical attention early to determine if casting or surgery is needed, as well as physical therapy to aid recovery. For minor injuries, the traditional R.I.C.E. method is recommended – rest, ice, compression, and elevation of the injured area. More recently, the PEACE & LOVE method has been proposed, which involves early mobilization to improve function and shorten recovery time.

Acute phase (0-3 days) of Sports Injuries: PEACE

  • P: Protect against further injury
  • E: Elevation of the injured area
  • A: Avoid anti-inflammatory medication
  • C: Compression
  • E: Education from a professional

Subacute phase (4-14 days) of Sports Injuries: LOVE

  • L: Load the injured tissue with appropriate exercise
  • O: Optimism and positive mindset
  • V: Vascularization through movement
  • E: Exercise to restore range of motion, strength, and proprioception

Recovery & Rehabilitations after Sports Injuries

Typically, minor soft tissue or bone injuries can recover to 70-80% of normal within two weeks. If no improvement is seen after this time, it may indicate limitations or tissue changes, and seeking professional advice for specialized rehabilitation.
