Causes of Urticaria (Hives)

Allergic reaction: Urticaria is usually caused by an allergic reaction, where the immune system releases excessive histamine when the body is exposed to triggers (such as foods, medications, pollen, etc.), leading to skin inflammation and hives.

Immune system abnormality: Abnormal immune system reactions may increase the patient’s sensitivity to allergens, making urticaria more likely to occur.

Stress and emotions: Stress and emotional changes are believed to be able to trigger or exacerbate urticaria symptoms.

Symptoms of Urticaria (Hives)

  • Skin redness, itching, and swelling: Urticaria patients often experience localized or generalized redness, swelling, and intense itching of the skin. In severe cases, with extensive swelling, especially on the face and eyelids, it can lead to difficulty in breathing, which is a critical condition.
  • Urticarial plaques: Urticarial plaques can range from the size of a mosquito bite to large, coalescing patches, appearing bright red, light red, or white in color. The location of the plaques can change and they may disappear on their own, only to reappear later.

TCM treatment of Urticaria (Hives)

Herbal medicine: The practitioner will prescribe Chinese herbs based on the patient’s urticaria symptoms and tongue diagnosis, aiming to regulating the immune system and eliminating the allergic response.

Acupuncture: Acupuncture can help regulate the flow of energy in the body and balance the immune system function, thereby reducing the allergic reaction and symptoms. Specific acupuncture points can be targeted to soothe skin inflammation and relieve itching.
