Dysmenorrhea

Dysmenorrhea TCM | Dysmenorrhea herbal medicine | Dysmenorrhea acupuncture

Dysmenorrhea is a common gynecological problem, referring to severe abdominal pain experienced by women during their menstrual period or before it.

The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment for dysmenorrhea needs to address both the symptoms and the underlying causes – in the acute phase, the focus is on pain relief, while in the recovery phase, the goal is to regulate the body constitution to prevent recurrence of the pain.

Causes of Dysmenorrhea

  • Excessive uterine contractions: During menstruation, uterine contractions help expel the uterine lining. However, some women experience excessively strong contractions, leading to insufficient blood supply and severe pain.
  • Endometriosis: This refers to the growth of uterine lining tissue outside the uterus, such as on the ovaries, peritoneum, or intestines. These ectopic endometrial tissues also respond to hormonal changes during menstruation, causing pain and inflammation.
  • Hormonal imbalance: Hormonal imbalances, such as excessive production of prostaglandins, can also lead to excessive uterine contractions and increased pain.
  • Psychological stress: Prolonged psychological stress and emotional instability can also contribute to dysmenorrhea by disrupting the normal functioning of the nervous system and exacerbating the pain.
  • Lifestyle factors: Poor dietary habits, lack of exercise, and irregular sleep patterns can also influence the occurrence of dysmenorrhea.

Symptoms of Dysmenorrhea

  • Severe abdominal pain: The main symptom is intense abdominal pain during the menstrual period or before it, which may be accompanied by cramps and a stabbing sensation.
  • Back and lower abdominal discomfort: Some women also experience discomfort in the back and lower abdomen during or before their periods, which can be a manifestation of dysmenorrhea.
  • Headaches and nausea: Some women may also experience headaches and nausea during their menstrual period or before it.

TCM Treatment of Dysmenorrhea

Herbal Medicine: The practitioner will prescribe appropriate herbal formulas based on the patient’s specific symptoms and constitution, such as those that promote blood circulation, warm the meridians, regulate Qi and relieve pain.

Acupuncture: Acupuncture can stimulate specific acupuncture points, such as the Uterus point, Stomach 36, and Pericardium 6, to improve pelvic blood circulation and regulate the flow of Qi and blood, thereby relieving dysmenorrhea symptoms.
