Causes of Gout

  • Dietary factors: Consuming high-purine foods (such as organ meats, seafood, and alcohol) can increase uric acid production, thereby increasing the risk of gout attacks. Additionally, excessive intake of sugary beverages and alcoholic drinks is also associated with the occurrence of gout.
  • Genetic factors: Certain genetic abnormalities may make individuals more susceptible to gout, and those with a family history have a relatively higher risk of developing the condition.
  • Metabolic abnormalities: Uric acid is a byproduct of nucleoside metabolism in the body. When the production or excretion of uric acid is abnormal, the uric acid level rises, increasing the likelihood of gout attacks.

Symptoms of Gout

  • Acute joint inflammation: The typical symptom of gout is acute mono-articular arthritis, usually starting in the joint of the big toe (known as gouty arthritis). The joint may suddenly experience severe pain, swelling, redness, and a burning sensation, making it difficult for the patient to touch or support.
  • Tophi: Prolonged elevated uric acid levels can lead to the formation of solid structures called tophi around the joints. The presence of tophi can result in joint deformity and functional impairment.
  • Kidney stones: Uric acid crystals can also form stones in the kidneys, leading to the occurrence of kidney stones and related symptoms, such as back pain and difficulty urinating.

TCM Treatment for Gout

The goals of TCM treatment for gout are to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and regulate the body’s constitution to decrease the frequency of attacks.

  • Herbal medicine: TCM practitioners will prescribe appropriate herbal formulations based on the patient’s symptoms and constitution, aiming to clear heat and toxins, and promote urination and drainage, thereby helping to eliminate excess uric acid and reduce joint and tissue inflammation.
  • Acupuncture: Acupuncture can regulate the flow of Qi and blood, targeting specific acupoints, such as Yingu and Sanyinjiao, to relieve pain, dissolve stones, and promote the body’s balance and recovery.
  • Dietary modification: Avoid high-purine foods, such as organ meats, seafood, and alcoholic beverages. Increase the intake of fiber-rich, vitamin C-rich, and hydrating foods, such as vegetables, fruits, and plain water, to help promote uric acid excretion.
