Causes of irregular menstruation

  • Hormonal imbalance: Hormones are key factors in regulating the menstrual cycle.
  • Ovarian dysfunction, thyroid problems, or polycystic ovary syndrome can lead to hormonal imbalances.
  • Stress and emotional factors: Prolonged stress, anxiety, and emotional fluctuations can also affect the menstrual cycle by interfering with the signals between the pituitary gland and ovaries, thus affecting hormone secretion and regulation.
  • Nutritional deficiency: Nutritional imbalance or lack of important nutrients like iron and vitamin D can also impact the normal menstrual cycle.
  • Lifestyle habits: Irregular schedules, lack of exercise, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption are also potential negative factors for the menstrual cycle.

Irregular menstruation from TCM perspective

From a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) perspective, irregular menstruation is related to the regulation of the liver, spleen, and kidneys.

Women have different physiological and pathological characteristics at different life stages, so TCM practitioners will tailor the treatment based on the patient’s constitution and menstrual irregularities.

TCM treatment of irregular menstruation

Herbal medicine: TCM practitioners will prescribe appropriate herbal formulas to regulate endocrine function, promote blood circulation, and balance yin and yang, based on the patient’s specific symptoms and constitution.

They may also use a “cyclical therapy” approach, providing different prescriptions for the different phases of the menstrual cycle.

Acupuncture: Acupuncture can stimulate specific acupuncture points to regulate the flow of qi and blood, and help restore the normal menstrual cycle by promoting pelvic blood circulation.
