Neurological Rehabilitation

Common Neurological Rehabilitation

The purpose of neurological rehabilitation is to improve the motor abilities of patients with brain injuries or neurological functional impairments, and to increase their independence and quality of life in daily activities. For example, in stroke patients, the initial 3-6 months is the golden period for treatment.

MANA Neurological Rehabilitation

In addition to traditional post-operative physiotherapy, MANA also provides Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatments for neurological rehabilitation to enhance the progress of rehabilitation.

The role of physiotherapy is to formulate rehabilitation training to strengthen the “neuroplasticity” of the brain, helping stroke patients relearn the control of their limbs and trunk, and improve their physical mobility and self-care abilities.

The role of TCM in neurological rehabilitation is to regulate qi and blood, nourish the nerves, and promote the smooth flow of stagnated qi and blood, in order to facilitate the recovery and functional improvement of the nervous system.

Neurological Rehabilitation- Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists will conduct a systematic assessment of the patient, including muscle strength, movement coordination control, balance, etc., and formulate an individualized treatment plan. Through various exercise training, they aim to restore muscle strength, balance and coordination.

Common treatments include:

  • Gait training: to improve lower limb and trunk coordination, limb sensory awareness, and learn to use assistive devices, increase functional mobility and reduce fall risk.
  • Muscle strengthening and coordination training: through equipment training to enhance muscle load-bearing capacity; techniques like mirror therapy and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) to help patients regain limb control and coordination.
  • Balance training: simulating uneven surfaces and narrow environments to reduce the risk of fall-related injuries.
  • Exercise combined with electrotherapy: using muscle electrical pulse stimulation to strengthen the nerve-muscle connection and accelerate the recovery of muscle size and strength.
  • Caregiver training: to enhance caregiving skills, transfer techniques, and supervision of home exercises.

Neurological Rehabilitation- TCM

  • Acupuncture: Stimulating specific acupuncture points, such as Zusanli and Baihui, can strengthen the spleen and boost qi, relax the tendons and activate the collaterals, regulate qi and blood flow, relieve muscle spasms, and promote nerve repair.
  • Chinese herbal medicine: Doctors will prescribe herbs to nourish qi and blood, activate blood and remove stasis, and dispel dampness and unblock the meridians, in order to replenish the body’s vital energy and promote nerve repair and regeneration.
