Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

PCOS Herbs | PCOS Acupucture

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common gynecological problem. Patients have hormonal imbalance, producing excess male hormones, leading to the presence of multiple immature follicles in the ovaries and chronic anovulation.

Common symptoms include irregular menstruation, obesity, hair loss, hirsutism, and acne. Ultrasound examination can reveal enlarged polycystic ovaries.

Causes of PCOS

  • Genetic factors
  • Hormonal imbalance: increased androgen (testosterone) and decreased estrogen levels, leading to ovarian dysfunction.
  • Insulin resistance: elevated insulin levels can stimulate excess androgen production.
  • Obesity or physical inactivity: over half of PCOS patients are overweight or obese.

Symptoms of PCOS

  • Menstrual irregularity: irregular, delayed, or absent menstruation, with occasional heavy or light periods.
  • Elevated male hormones: manifested as excessive body hair, severe acne, and hair loss.
  • Polycystic ovaries: ultrasound shows enlarged ovaries with more than 10 immature follicles.
  • Weight problems: tendency for weight gain, obesity, and difficulty losing weight.

PCOS from TCM perspective

Traditional Chinese medicine believes PCOS is related to qi stagnation, blood stasis, phlegm-dampness, and kidney deficiency. Treatment focuses on regulating liver, spleen and kidney function, promoting blood circulation, and resolving dampness to regulate the menstrual cycle and ovulation.

TCM treatment of PCOS

Herbal medicine: Prescriptions are tailored to the patient’s specific symptoms and constitution, aiming to regulate the endocrine system.

A “cyclic therapy” approach is used, providing different prescriptions during the different stages of the menstrual cycle to promote ovulation and regulate the cycle.

Acupuncture: Can regulate the endocrine system and improve pelvic blood circulation, helping to restore normal menstrual cycles and ovulation.

Self-management of PCOS

  • Regular exercise, with weight loss for obese patients.
  • Avoid consuming high-sugar, high-fat, greasy, and cold foods.
  • Maintain a positive mood and emotional state.
