Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints, leading to joint pain, swelling, and limited function. Statistics show that the peak incidence of rheumatoid arthritis is between the ages of 30 and 50, and women are about three times more likely to develop the disease than men.

Causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Genetic factors: Certain genes may predispose individuals to rheumatoid arthritis. If there is a family history of the disease, other family members have a higher risk of developing it.

Immune system dysfunction: Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, where the immune system overreacts and attacks the joint cartilage and tissues, leading to inflammation.

Environmental factors: Certain environmental triggers, such as infections, stress, and tobacco use, may trigger or exacerbate rheumatoid arthritis flare-ups.

Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

  • Joint pain and swelling: Rheumatoid arthritis primarily affects the joints in the fingers, wrists, knees, and ankles, causing symmetrical joint pain, swelling, and stiffness.
  • Morning stiffness: The affected joints often feel particularly stiff in the morning and can last for several hours. Limited joint function: Damaged joints can have a reduced range of motion, making daily activities and exercise more difficult.
  • Fatigue and general malaise: Rheumatoid arthritis patients often experience fatigue, weakness, and a general sense of unwellness, which may include fever and loss of appetite.
