Fungal skin infections (tinea) are a common skin disease primarily caused by fungal infections, which can affect various parts of the skin, including the feet, nails, hands, and scalp.

濕疹, eczema

Causes of Tinea

  • Fungal Infection: Fungal skin infections are primarily caused by fungi, including mold and yeast. These fungi are present in the environment, and when the skin is compromised or the immune system function is reduced, the fungi can proliferate and cause infection.
  • Humid Environment: Humid environments are ideal for fungal growth, such as public bathrooms and locker rooms. Prolonged exposure to a humid environment can keep the skin moist, increasing the risk of fungal infection.
  • Shared Items: Sharing personal items like towels, socks, and shoes can also be a way of transmitting fungal infections.

Symptoms of Fungal Skin Infections (Tinea)

  • Scalp (Tinea Capitis): Scattered redness and scaling on the scalp, accompanied by hair loss.
  • Body (Tinea Corporis): Itchy, scaly, and well-defined reddish rash on the trunk and limbs.
  • Groin (Tinea Cruris): Similar symptoms as Tinea Corporis, usually affecting the inner thighs, buttocks, and genital area.
  • Feet (Tinea Pedis): The skin between the toes becomes moist and softened, while the soles may develop blisters or dry, keratinized lesions with peeling skin and itching.
  • Fingernails and Toenails: (Onychomycosis) Infected nails may change in color, detach from the nail bed, have excessive keratinization, or become deformed and painful.

Three-step TCM treatment of Fungal Skin Infections (Tinea)

  • Herbal Medicine: The practitioner will prescribe Chinese herbs based on the patient’s symptoms and tongue diagnosis, using methods to regulate the body’s immune system and combat the fungal infection.
  • Topical ointment: The practitioner will provide topical treatment for the affected area, such as Chinese herbal ointments and washes, to inhibit fungal growth and reduce inflammation and symptoms.
  • Acupuncture: Chinese acupuncture stimulates specific acupoints to promote the flow of Qi and blood, balance the body’s yin-yang, and enhance the immune system function to fight the fungal infection.
