Trigger Finger Is Not The Only Reason For Your Stiffness

In the morning, my fingers are especially stiff, when I bend them they get stuck and won’t straighten out, but the situation gradually improves as I move them. Finger stiffness in the morning is not an issue exclusive to trigger finger. Let me introduce you to the pathologies related to finger tendons and joints.

Table of Index

What Is Trigger Finger?

The proper medical term for trigger finger is stenosing tenosynovitis of the finger flexor tendon. It is caused by overuse of the finger flexor tendon, which leads to inflammation and swelling of the tendon sheath, resulting in tendon edema, inflammation, and the formation of hard nodules.

When the tendon canal narrows and the tendon cannot smoothly pass through, the finger gets stuck and there is a snapping sound when you forcefully open it.

Differential Diagnosis of Trigger Finger

The morning stiffness of the fingers is not exclusive to trigger finger. Here are some other conditions with similar symptoms:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Mallet Finger

The key difference is that only trigger finger develops nodules on the tendon. The other two can be distinguished by blood tests, and the third is usually caused by trauma.

Who is more prone to developing trigger finger?

The following groups are more susceptible to developing trigger finger:

Middle-aged individuals (40-60 years old)

Homemakers

People who work long hours on computers

Individuals whose work involves heavy lifting or repetitive motions, such as chefs, construction workers, etc.

Those who frequently play musical instruments

3 Exercises To Treat Trigger Finger

Trigger finger is a overuse injury, so the most important thing is to reduce the workload and allow more rest. In addition, I recommend trying the following 3 exercises:

Massage the forearm muscles for 2 minutes

Stretch the wrist tendons

Gently bend the affected finger 20 times, do 2 sets (as long as it doesn’t hurt too much)

If the issue keeps recurring and doesn’t improve, I suggest consulting a professional therapist for a thorough examination and analysis to address the root cause.
