Myasthenia Gravis

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects the neuromuscular junction. This disease leads to muscle weakness and fatigue, especially after repeated muscle use. The main cause of MG is the immune system attacking the receptors in the neuromuscular junction area, disrupting the transmission of neuromuscular signals.

Symptoms of Myasthenia Gravis

Symptoms of Myasthenia Gravis includes:

  • Muscle weakness: The primary feature is muscle weakness and easy fatigability. The eye muscles are most commonly affected, causing symptoms like inability to gaze for long or difficulty in blinking. Other muscle groups like the face, chewing, throat, neck, and limbs can also be affected.
  • Worsening of muscle weakness: Muscle weakness may worsen with use of the muscles, such as during continuous reading, writing, or exercise. The symptoms typically improve with rest.
  • Fluctuating muscle fatigue: Muscles quickly fatigue with use and may require a period of rest or recovery to regain strength.

Causes of Myasthenia Gravis

Causes of Myasthenia Gravis is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks the acetylcholine receptors (AChR) in the neuromuscular junction area. This disrupts the transmission of neuromuscular signals, leading to muscle weakness and fatigue.

Physiotherapy for Myasthenia Gravis

Physiotherapists can design exercise and rehabilitation programs, including joint stretching, muscle strengthening, balance training, and gait training, to help patients regain muscle control, balance, and daily living skills.

TCM for Myasthenia Gravis

Common TCM treatments include:

  • Internal medicine: TCM practitioners may prescribe herbs to tonify Qi, strengthen the spleen, and resolve dampness, in order to enhance physical strength, improve muscle function, and reduce fatigue.
  • Acupuncture: Stimulating specific acupoints can have a revitalizing effect on the brain, facilitate joint mobility, tonify the spleen and Qi, and nourish the blood. This can help regulate the flow of Qi and blood circulation, promote muscle growth.
