Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s Disease is a chronic disease that affects the nervous system, primarily caused by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the brain. This disease leads to impairments in movement and other bodily functions, such as muscle stiffness, tremors, and loss of coordination.

Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease

Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease includes:

Motor Impairments: Including muscle stiffness, slow movements, unstable gait, and balance problems. Patients may have difficulty walking or controlling the movements of their hands and feet.

Tremors: Usually occur at rest and can diminish or disappear during movement. Tremors mainly affect the hands but can also impact the jaw, feet, or face. Muscle

Rigidity: Muscles become stiff, leading to limited joint mobility. This rigidity can cause discomfort or pain.

Balance Issues: Parkinson’s patients may experience balance and coordination problems, making them prone to falls or loss of balance.

Emotional and Cognitive Changes: Parkinson’s can lead to mood fluctuations, depression, and attention problems. Cognitive functions, such as memory and thinking abilities, may also be affected.

Causes of Parkinson's Disease

Causes of Parkinson’s Disease includes:

  • Genetic factors

Physiotherapy for Parkinson's Disease

Physiotherapists can design exercise and rehabilitation programs, including joint stretching, muscle strengthening, balance training, and gait training, to help patients regain muscle control, balance, and daily living skills.

TCM treatment for Parkinson's Disease

Common TCM treatments include:

  • Internal medicine: TCM practitioners may prescribe herbs to tonify the body’s Qi, relax the sinews, and calm the mind, helping to alleviate muscle stiffness and slow the disease progression.
  • Acupuncture: Stimulating specific acupuncture points, such as Fengchi, Hegu, and Zusanli, can help regulate the body’s Qi and blood circulation, which can assist in relieving muscle stiffness and improving motor function. Acupuncture can also facilitate the effectiveness of subsequent Physiotherapy.
